What is Man?

We've all heard the saying "a photograph doesn't lie".  Well, that's mostly true if you don't include modern day "photo-shopped" images.  But seriously, we all know how unforgiving and revealing a picture can be, especially when it's a picture of us. How many times have we heard, or said, "I look so old", or "I look fat".  But, have you ever heard  anyone say, "I look so small"?

In October Paul and I had the privilege of photographing scenery along the White Rim Trail in Canyonlands National Park, Utah.  The trail is over one hundred miles long and every mile is filled with an abundance of  photographic opportunities.  The White Rim Trail gets it's name from the white layer of sandstone that can be seen along the rim of the many canyons that surround the confluence of the Green and Colorado Rivers.  The majority of the trail follows the rim of these canyons.

The picture above reminds me of  Psalm 8:3-4 which reads:  "When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars,which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?"  Can you locate Paul in this picture.  He looks rather insignificant when compared to the rock formation that he is sitting on. The truth is,  we are all very small and powerless, especially when compared to God, our Creator.  The creation is full of awesome examples of  how big and powerful God is.  Our trip on the White Rim gave us plenty of opportunities to witness His greatness.

I left Canyonlands feeling rather small amidst the grandiose landscape.  Like the psalmist, I am amazed that such a great God thinks about me, cares for me, and loves me.
