How Great is God?

Sir Isaac Newton once wrote, "I must confess to a feeling of profound humility in the presence of a universe which transcends us at almost every point".  Gazing into the sky on a clear moonless night is almost mesmerizing.  This is especially true if done in a remote area free of city lights.  Earlier this year I found myself in such a place in northern Arizona near Vermillion Cliffs National Monument.  The nights there are especially dark with a view of the stars that is truly awesome.  I had to stay up late to photograph the Milky Way as it rose over the horizon.  My waiting was well worth it as I was able to capture a beautiful display of God's greatness.

What do you think about when you gaze into the stars?  The vastness, the beauty, the splendor -- there is nothing like it in the whole world.  The Bible tells us that God created the heavens and the earth.  What He created gives us a glimpse of what He is like.  Ancient Israel's King David wrote about this in Psalm 86:8-10.  Take time to think about these words.
"There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours.  All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name.  For you are great and do wondrous things; you alone are God".

God is great because of who He is.  It is because of who He is that He does wondrous things.   God cannot cease from being great.  God says in Malachi 3:6 "I the Lord do not change", and the writer of Hebrews  says in 13:8 that "Jesus (who is God) is the same yesterday, today, and forever."   The greatness of God is also unfathomable.  Psalm 145:3 says "Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable".  The word "unsearchable" can also be translated "infinite or incomprehensible.  So, the Bible tells us that God is great, His greatness is beyond our imagination, and His greatness will never end.

The next time you go star gazing, remember that the starry universe before you, in all of it's beauty, is only one example of God showing His infinite greatness.
