Just recently I had the opportunity to catch a sunset in White Sands National Monument near Alamogordo, New Mexico. This white sand desert is the largest gypsum dunefield in the world. That in itself in unique, but there is another characteristic about White Sands that makes it special -- especially at sunset. Because the white sand reflects light so well, the sunset afterglow lasts for a long time -- much longer than in other settings. Light is one of those things that we often take for granted. The older I get the more I have come to appreciate light. This is especially true when I'm trying to see something up close. Maybe you can relate. But for everyone, even if we don't think about it, light is important. Light allows us to see things. In the absence of light we are blind and can't see. Light is also necessary for life. Our world would be a desolate place without it. There is another kind of light that we also need in order to really live. Jesus said in John 8:12, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but have the light of life". Spiritual light shows us our sinfulness and our need for God, but it also points us to the Lifegiver. Jesus is that Light we need. If we choose to follow Him He promises to guide us and give us true life now and forever. Craig Jentink
